A Fond Farewell to Christine Reynard

Newsletter Spotlight

Christine Reynard is one of our accomplished dog trainers at the RAPS City Shelter. Christine is leaving to continue to build her successful business doing what she does so very well — expert dog training.

Everyone at RAPS will miss Christine.  She is one of those staff members who always kept things running smoothly, no matter what!  She has also brought her expertise in dog training to help so many dogs who came to us with behavior problems to leave RAPS ready for their new home away from RAPS.

Christine’s relationship with RAPS is not over though, as we hope to see her often.
Best of luck to you Christine!  Thanks for all you’ve done to build the RAPS City Shelter in to the successful shelter it is today.

Jake is a sweet and shy little guy! Personality is definitely not lacking in Jake and he is quite the little charmer. After he warms up to you he will become your best pal! He is up to date on vaccines, is house broken and neutered. He’s ready to go at the RAPS City Shelter.

Senior Dogs are All Heart by Christie Lagally

I’ve always have a special place in my heart for older dogs.  Although, I have recently rediscovered the joy of a puppy when my husband and I adopted a young dog from RAPS, Toby. It is sure fun to get to know the little guy, but it has made me cherish the unique experience of adopting our older dog.

One year ago, my husband and I adopted Duchess – an eight year old Lab/Border Collie cross. She was at the RAPS City Shelter for quite some time, and sadly it was clear she was under-socialized in her previous home.  When we met Duchess, she wouldn’t look at us or go for a walk with us.  She just didn’t want to make any friends she might have to leave again.  It was too sad for her.  Luckily, we came to visit Duchess the next day, and we found her playing happily with another dog.  That day, Duchess stole our hearts.  As with many senior dogs, she had all the playfulness of a younger animal, but she knew just when to lay down and enjoy the sunshine too. Duchess came home with us that very afternoon.

Duchess has a heart of pure love, but she doesn’t show it easily.  Getting to know her has been a slow but rewarding process.  Many “firsts” came after quite a long time – the first time she would eat a bone in contentment, the first time she would ask for a walk and the first time she rolled over to have her tummy rubbed were all moments of pure pleasure for my husband and I.  Duchess is now convinced that she won’t be losing her new friends.

My experience adopting an older dog is not uncommon. Although we can list the great things about adopting a senior dog (i.e. house training complete, quieter animal, etc.), this list will never capture the growth of love and respect that an older adopted dog and their new human companion can develop.  It’s truly a unique and rewarding experience.   If you are looking to adopt a dog, please consider adopting an older dog.  RAPS has many dogs, like Duchess, who are looking for just the right forever home.  Please come and visit our shelter.

Mocha is a seven year old Shih Tzu that was abandoned at our shelter. He is a very sweet boy. However, he is untrusting of strangers and will need time to get to know you. Therefore Mocha may do best with an older or quiet couple. Once Mocha trusts you he is a very affectionate dog and will follow you anywhere! Come visit with Mocha at the RAPS City Shelter.
